Gunturmadu<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/vetter.sites.grinnell.edu\/gamelan\/kraton-yogyakarta-gamelans\/k-k-nagawilaga\/\">K.K. Nagawilaga<\/a>, in the yearly Sekaten ceremony (commemoration of the birth of Mohammed). Over a seven-day period annually, Javanese traditionalists have the opportunity to hear these\u00a0<em>pusaka<\/em>\u00a0gamelans in their primary role as indices of Islam and to be\u00a0reminded of the\u00a0inherited responsibility of the Sultan to serve as the protector of religion (\u201c<em>sayidin panata gama<\/em>\u201c)\u00a0and the successor\u00a0of Mohammed (\u201c<em>kalifatulah<\/em>\u201c).
