Similar to \u00a0the\u00a0<em>kempul <\/em>but smaller in size, the vibrating surface of a\u00a0<em>bendh\u00e9<\/em>\u00a0is thicker and produces a penetrating middle-register pitch. The two palace <em>gamelan sekati<\/em> and the <em>p\u00e9log<\/em> gamelan K.K. Guntursari include a pair of <em>bendh\u00e9<\/em> hung from a shared rack, each gong of the pair producing a distinct pitch. Other palace gamelans share a single <em>bendh\u00e9<\/em> used as a signaling instrument to mark the beginning of a performance of dance.
