Gunturmadu, with the two <em>pengapit<\/em> gongs on either side of the platform on which the performer sits.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A gong chime consisting of two parallel rows of horizontally resting bronze gongs with turned-back rims and raised central bosses, which are struck with a pair of thinly padded stick beaters held in the hands of the performer. One<em>\u00a0bonang sekati\u00a0<\/em>is found in each of the two palace\u00a0<em>gamelan<\/em>\u00a0<em>sekati<\/em>, which are\u00a0<em>p\u00e9log\u00a0<\/em>gamelans, and has 14 gongs on a bed-like frame plus two additional gongs, called\u00a0<em>pengapit<\/em>, each resting in its own\u00a0<em>kenong<\/em>-like frame. One\u00a0<em>pengapit<\/em>\u00a0is located immediately to the left and right sides of the seated performer. The gongs in one row, plus the\u00a0<em>pengapit<\/em>\u00a0gongs, have a higher profile (called\u00a0<em>jaler<\/em>, or male) than the gongs in the other row (called\u00a0<em>setren<\/em>, or female) and are tuned an octave higher. The primary player of the\u00a0<em>bonang sekati<\/em>\u00a0performs only on the\u00a0<em>jaler<\/em>\u00a0row and the two\u00a0<em>pengapit<\/em>\u00a0gongs; one or two other musicians sound the\u00a0<em>setren<\/em>\u00a0gongs in the other row as though they were\u00a0<em>kenong<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A gong chime consisting of two parallel rows of horizontally resting bronze gongs with turned-back rims and raised central bosses, which are struck with a pair of thinly padded stick beaters held in the hands of the performer.
