The bars are struck with two small hammer-like beaters with heads made of buffalo horn or wood. The instrument produces a clear, penetrating metallic sound.\u00a0<em>Gambang gongsa<\/em>\u00a0are not typically found in gamelans manufactured after 1900 CE.\u00a0 When included, only one\u00a0<em>gambang gongsa<\/em>\u00a0is found in a gamelan. Its earlier (19<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0c.) playing style has been lost.
