Each of the five films found in this section of the site focuses on a single facet of the musical life of the Kraton Yogyakarta. All of the video footage incorporated into these films was shot during a visit to Yogyakarta in March 2007. Still images worked into the films were taken between 1982 and 2007 during research visits to Java.
The intended purpose of these films is to provide a more multi-sensorial encounter of palace gamelans in the cultural landscape of palace life than is possible through written text alone, even when that text is supplemented with audio recordings.
The video footage and many of the still images were taken on a handheld Panasonic PV-GS500 digital video camcorder. The films were produced on iMovie software.
