kenong japan

The kenong japan of the gamelan sléndro K.K. Marikangen.

A large, horizontally-resting bronze gong with very deep turned-back rim and a raised central boss which is struck with a thinly-padded stick beater. Produces a muted middle-register pitch. Some archaic and all Yogyanese common practice gamelans have a single kenong japan placed in a box-like case.
