gambang

Gambang” is the generic term for multi-octave gamelan tuned-bar instruments (xylophones and metallophones), the keys of which are arranged in a scalar fashion over a shared trough-like resonating space. The bars on a gambang are usually sounded with two beaters, one held in each hand of the performer. In contradistinction to saron instruments, the keys on gambang instruments are held in place by one rather than two resonator mounted pegs that pass through holes in them. Gambang instruments have a second row of resonator mounted pegs that are situated between pairs of its keys to keep them from coming in contact with one another; saron instruments have no such spacing pegs.
